BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestra will bring the sounds of opera and the movies to locals at their spring concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at The Klein in Bridgeport.

The orchestra will perform music from “Pirates of the Caribbean,” musical shorts by John Williams, composer of the “Star Wars” theme, and Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” In addition, the Principal Orchestra will accompany GBYO Concerto Competition winner Julian Shively, as he plays George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” on piano. Shively, a 15-year-old Trumbull resident, is a cellist in the orchestra, as well as an accomplished pianist who has won numerous piano competitions. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.

GBYO also will delight audiences with an outdoor concert on the Great Lawn of the historic Pequot Library in Southport at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 21. There is no charge for this concert. Bring chairs and blankets and enjoy classical, jazz and modern music in a relaxed, natural setting.

The Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras, six ensembles in all, including a jazz ensemble, is comprised of 290 student musicians in grades 5-12 from more than 30 towns in Connecticut. Rehearsals are weekly in Fairfield, and at least three concerts per year are performed at the Klein Auditorium in Bridgeport.

New student auditions will take place from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 15 at Tomlinson Middle School, Fairfield.

The GBYO will tour in Italy this summer.
