BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — The Center for Family Justice in Bridgeport, as part of its ongoing efforts to engage men and boys in the effort to break the cycle of domestic and sexual violence, is hosting a lecture by internationally acclaimed author/activist Tony Porter.

Porter’s lecture is considered appropriate for college students as well as teenagers in middle and high school and they are encouraged to attend with their parents. The lecture, 7 p.m. on Nov. 4, is free to students with a valid ID. The general public is welcome and encouraged to attend for a suggested donation of $10.

The Center provides free, confidential, bilingual crisis services in Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford and Trumbull.

Porter’s call to men everywhere, “Don’t Act Like a Man,” was the subject of a 2010 TED talk, which has since garnered more than 1.8 million You Tube views. Telling powerful stories from his own life, Porter demonstrates how a violent mentality drummed into men and boys from an early age, can lead them to disrespect, mistreat and abuse not only women, but each other.

His solution: “Break free from the man box.” Porter’s appearance on behalf of The Center, is the third annual lecture focused on encouraging and supporting the role of men and boys as partners in the efforts to end domestic and sexual abuse and violence.

The Center is also actively engaged in supporting a statewide White Ribbon Campaign, which similarly encourages men to be leaders in these ongoing efforts to promote a healthy, respectful manhood and speak out against violence against women and girls.
