Litchfield County resident Audrey Bennett, of Woodbury, faces two counts of criminal impersonation and one charge each of identity theft, theft, and criminal attempt of larceny, Wallingford Police said on Friday, May 12.
A New Haven County woman called Wallingford police on Jan. 17 after someone used her information to buy a new iPhone 14 from AT&T, authorities said. The woman told investigators that someone had stolen her wallet from her car parked in her driveway.
It's unclear if Bennett was involved in stealing the wallet, but officers say she used information and cards from it multiple times in the coming weeks.
On Jan. 30, someone tried to open two credit cards in the victim's name. They opened a bank account with her information, police said.
On Feb. 13, police said Bennett went to the woman's bank in Meriden to try to take over her account, police said. She had the victim's ID and matched her physically, but she could not answer the security questions and left empty-handed, authorities said.
Eight days later, Bennett bought two iPhone 14 Pro Maxes at a T-Mobile store in Meriden, police allege.
An investigation revealed she had also used the woman's information to buy two Bulova watches at a Zale’s Jewelers in Trumbull, police said.
Bennett was being held on a $21,000 surety bond, authorities said.
