$30K Gambling Scam: Man Nabbed For Scheme In Mineola
A Brooklyn man was caught and arrested for attempting to scam a Long Island woman out of tens of thousands of dollars, police said.
It happened on Monday, April 1 in Mineola, according to Nassau County Police.
On that day, a 57-year-old woman was contacted by the alleged scammer, who claimed to be a Microsoft employee.
He told the victim that she had a $30,000 gambling charge on her account.

A 49-year-old Queens, NY man was arrested and charged on Tuesday, Feb. 27 with scamming $30,000 from a 76-year-old Nutley woman through an email scam, authorities said.
The woman said she responded to a Microsoft e-mail telling her to contact technical support, Nutley police said.
The scammer told her accounts had been jeopardized and walked her through a $30,000 withdrawal, police said. The woman visited several banks and handed the money to a person who came to her door on the evening of Monday, Feb. 26, police said.

A Russian businessman was convicted this week of an elaborate conspiracy where he and several others hacked into a computer system located in Boston to steal yet-to-released earnings reports from hundreds of companies and used the information to buy stocks, authorities said. Tech Entrepreneur Tony Hsieh, 46, Dies From Injuries In CT House Fire
Tony Hsieh, the retired CEO of online shoe and clothing retailer Zappos, died at age 46 from injuries sustained in a fire at a Connecticut home.
The blaze broke out on Wednesday, Nov. 18 in New London, and Hsieh died from his injuries on Friday, Nov. 27 at Bridgeport Hospital with his family by his side, according to KLAS 8 News Now in Las Vegas, where Zappos' headquarters is located.
Hsieh retired as Zappos CEO in August 2020 after 21 years. Before joining Zappos, he sold LinkExchange, an Internet advertising network, to Microsoft in 1998 for $265 million.
