More Than 13,000 Without Power On Jersey Shore After Substation Failure
Thousands of residents in two Ocean County townships were without power after severe thunderstorms raced across the northeast and caused a substation to fail, officials said.
According to the outage map for Jersey Central Power & Light, 13,688 customers had no electricity as of 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 27. More than 13,000 of those affected were living in Barnegat or Waretown.

Stephen Gallagher, Former Police Chief In Morris County, Dies At 66
Stephen Gallagher, who served as police chief in Hanover Township, died recently at the age of 66, according to his obituary.
Born in Montclair, Gallagher spent most of his life in Morris Plains and had recently moved to Waretown, his obituary reads. After earning his degree from the College of St. Elizabeth, Gallagher became Chief of Police for the Township of Hanover, retiring in 2016 after 34 years serving the township, according to his obituary.

A police sergeant was justified in fatally shooting a New York man who jumped him and tried taking his gun during a furious struggle on the shoulder of the Garden State Parkway, a grand jury has found.

Bicyclist, 61, Struck, Killed In Jersey Shore Crash
A 61-year-old bicyclist from Ocean County was killed when he was struck by a Jeep, authorities said.
On Monday, May 2, at 9:40 p.m., Stafford police responded to a collision on Route 72 westbound near the Garden State Parkway.
Investigation indicated that a 2012 Jeep operated by Ronald Sheehy, 55, of Waretown, was traveling west on Route 72, and transitioning into the far right lane to access the Garden State Parkway north ramp, Stafford police said.

A Jersey Shore man who was caught with a handful of phony federal agent IDs in his own name admitted also having a homemade rifle and a silencer.
Jeffrey Backlund, 57, of Waretown, took a deal from the government rather than face trial, pleading guilty on Wednesday, April 27, to illegally possessing all of them, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said.
Backlund was arrested after a warranted search prompted by a domestic disturbance in September 2020 turned up “a number of firearms and imitation federal identification badges,” Sellinger said.

Woman, 59, Killed In Jersey Shore Crash: Police
A 59-year-old woman was killed in a two-car crash on the Jersey Shore, authorities said.
On Sunday, Feb. 20 at 3:53 p.m., Barnegat police responded to Barnegat Boulevard North and Cole Drive for a report of a motor vehicle crash.
Police found the driver of one of the vehicles, Alice Toriello, 59, of Barnegat unconscious and unresponsive.
Officers performed life-saving measures on Toriello who was transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead, police said.

Jersey Shore Driver, 21, Killed In Garden State Parkway Exit Ramp Crash
A 21-year-old Jersey Shore driver was killed in a crash on a Garden State Parkway exit ramp over the weekend.
Kevin Grady was attempting to leave the road at Exit 69 in Ocean Township when he lost control of his Audi A4, veered to the left and struck several small trees around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, New Jersey State Police said.
Grady's vehicle hit a large tree, bringing the car to a stop. He was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, and was later pronounced dead, NSP Sgt. Philip Curry said.
Grady, of Waretown, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, police said.

Friends of Elena Spinosa, who was seriously injured in a car accident in Berkeley last month, are raising money to help cover her medical and child care expenses.
She lives in Toms River with her husband, Corrado, and their three children, Alessandra, Constantine and Dino.
Alessandra and Constantine, were passengers in the car during the Feb. 29 crash, but sustained minor injuries and are doing well, according to this Facebook page, where more than $9,000 had been raised as of Tuesday.
