Fairview Restaurant Owner In $90,000 Wire Transfer Scam Flees To Brazil, Returned To US
A Fairview restaurant owner who claimed to be sending wire transfers for customers to Brazil pocketed at least $90,000 before fleeing the country, authorities said.
Joanistel Ramos, 59, who owns Brasil and Brazil restaurant on Anderson Avenue, stiffed at least 15 local victims out of $40,000 in wire transfers that were never sent, Fairvew Police Capt. Michael Martic said.
"She basically printed out a bogus generic receipt and put the money in her pocket," the captain said.

Smash-And-Grab Burglars Flee Fairview Deli With Cash, Lottery Tickets, Registers
A burglary crew smashed their way into a Fairview deli overnight before making off with two cash registers, $800 in cash and lottery tickets, police said.
Three bandits threw a stone through the glass to enter Panela's Deli on Walker Street just off 6th Avenue shortly before 3:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, Capt. Michael Martic said.
They fled in a Honda Civic (photo above), driven by a fourth member, that headed east on Walker Street and then north on Anderson Avenue, the captain said.
One of the burglars apparently had dreadlocks, Martic said.

Spar-oh: Fairview Pizzeria Manager Injured, Customer Jailed In Tussle Over Tip Jar
A Fairview pizzeria manager was injured and a customer jailed on robbery charges after they tangled over the tip jar, authorities said.
John N. Pineda, 23, told police he went to Villa Pizza on Anderson Avenue expecting to pay five bucks for two slices, Capt. Michael Martic said.
He got a bill for $6 instead.
Pineda told police that the manager, Fares Muhana, informed him that the price had changed from $2.50 a slice to $3 since last week, the captain said.
Pineda said he only had a five-dollar bill on him. Muhana said he was still a buck short.

Stolen Cab Thief Face-Plants After Fleeing Police, Crashing In Fairview
Thieves in a cab stolen out of Union City crashed into another vehicle, injuring two occupants, while trying to flee police in Fairview, authorities said.
Borough police spotted the stolen 2008 Crown Victoria at Anderson and Day avenues around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday after getting a call from the cab company, which had been tracking it on GPS, Police Chief Martin Kahn said.
The driver hit the gas, then T-boned a small SUV at the Shaler Avenue intersection two blocks away, he said.

Police charged a Fairview driver with DWI after her Cadillac SUV struck a parked car and rolled over before dawn Thursday.
The 2019 XT4 struck a parked car on Anderson Avenue at DeSoto Place, near Fairvew police headquarters, at 1:49 a.m., Chief Martin Kahn said.
The struck car got slammed into another, while the SUV driven by Blanca Perez, 29, rolled and landed on its wheels, he said.
Perez, whose breath smelled of alcohol, said she wasn't injured, but EMTs insisted she be checked out at Hackensack University Medical Center, Kahn said.
