Raymond A. Tierney, the Suffolk County District Attorney, urged the public to be vigilant of scams after an elderly Setauket resident was conned out of $650,000 by someone claiming to be a federal agent, the DA’s office announced on Friday, April 28.

Jose Martinez-Vazquez, age 24, and Tiffany Diaz-Cabrera, age 20, both of Port Jefferson Station, were arrested Sunday, March 5, for second-degree murder in the death of Benjamin Flores-Mendez, according to Suffolk County Police.

Trio Apprehended In String Of Dunkin' Burglaries In Suffolk County
An investigation into a string of burglaries of Dunkin' locations on Long Island led to charges for three people.
Two people broke into Dunkin', located at 1105 Horseblock Road in Farmingville, at about 3:40 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, the Suffolk County Police Department reported.
They stole cash and left the scene in a waiting vehicle, which detectives pulled over a short time later, SCPD said.
Police arrested the driver, identified as 54-year-old Michael Gruber, and the passengers, 51-year-old Kristen Osmolia and 44-year-old Christopher Volpe, authorities reported.

8 Mosquito Samples Test Positive For West Nile Virus On Long Island
More mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus have been found on Long Island, health officials announced.
Eight mosquito samples tested positive for the virus following testing done at locations around Suffolk County, according to County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott.
The samples were collected on Tuesday, Aug. 9, and Wednesday, Aug. 10, from Copiague, Cold Spring Harbor, Setauket, Aquebogue, Bay Shore, and Nesconset.
So far this year, 59 samples have tested positive for the virus, health officials said.

Police on Long Island are asking the public for help identifying two men wanted for allegedly stealing wallets and cash from unlocked cars.
The incidents took place in June in Suffolk County in the Setauket, Terryville, Stony Brook, and Port Jefferson areas.
According to police, the two men entered the cars and stole wallets containing cash, credit and debit cards, and licenses.
They were seen driving what appears to be a light-colored sedan, police said.

Dog Shot, Killed After Attacking Four Including Officer On Long Island
A dog was fatally shot after attacking four people, including a police officer on Long Island.
The incident took place around 12:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 27 in Setauket.
That's when Suffolk County Police responded to a home on St. George Glen Road for a report of a dog attacking three residents.
According to police, when officers arrived on the scene, a 6-year-old English Bulldog attacked the officer, and the officer shot and killed the dog.

A Suffolk County man has been indicted for the alleged murder of a Long Island man in broad daylight on a busy street.
Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy D. Sini announced the indictment of Joseph Garcia, 19, of Port Jefferson Station, on Thursday, April 8, for the murder of David Bliss Jr., age 25, of Shirley, on Wednesday, March 24.
