The death of a Loudoun County high school athlete is sending shock and sadness through the community.
Heritage High School grad and Leesburg resident Raquel "Rocky" Elardo, died on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024, surrounded by her family, her obituary on the Loudoun Funeral Chapel & Crematory website shows. She was 18 years old.
Rocky was diagnosed with cancer in 2019, after a collarbone injury suffered during a basketball game wasn't healing, according to a GoFundMe launched for the Elardos. As it turns out, a tumor was pressing on the bone.

A longtime area coach and athlete is being remembered with the creation of a local scholarship.
The late Tyrone Fashaw, 68, attended Perth Amboy High School where he excelled as a three-sport student-athlete. He was a natural at most sports, so much so that he was given the nickname, "Flash" for his above-average speed, according to Kenneth Ortiz, who organized this GoFundMe page.

A man whose body was found in a Long Island cove has been identified as a former employee of the New York City Opera and a chef who had a lifelong passion for music.
Keith Viagas, of Sag Harbor, died on Saturday, Aug. 6, from drowning near his home in Sag Harbor Cove. He was age 63.
Viagas grew up in Franklin Square, attending both John Street School and H. Frank Carey High School, where he appeared in musicals, according to his obituary.
His late father, Anthony Viagas, was a jazz musician, and Viagas lived in a home filled with music.

Former Mayor In Westchester Dies At Age 60
Dennis Pilla, who served four terms as a mayor in Westchester, has died at the age of 60.
Pilla died peacefully on Thursday, July 8, according to his obituary. He was the Port Chester mayor from 2007 to 2013 and from 2015 to 2017.
Pilla was also formerly president of the Westchester Municipal Officials Association from 2012 to 2013, and a member of its executive committee from 2017 to 2014.
He is survived by his wife, Margoth Pilla, and his son, David. He is also survived by David's wife, Kristy, and their children, Danny and Lily.
