The five-part series focus is through the lens of film -- how we learn about people and issues outside of our daily sphere of reference and what our responsibility is to the global society at large.

"They Will Have to Kill Us First: Malian Music in Exhile" will be shown March 6 at 7 p.m.

A discussion and Q&A with the film’s director Johanna Schwartz will follow the film.

"They Will Have to Kill Us First: Malian Music in Exile" is a feature-length documentary following musicians in Mali in the wake of a jihadist takeover in 2012 and subsequent banning of music. Music, one of the most important forms of communication in Mali, disappeared overnight in 2012 when Islamic extremist groups rose up to capture an area the size of the UK and France combined. But rather than lay down their instruments, Mali’s musicians fought back.

"They Will Have to Kill Us First" sees musicians on the run, tells the story of the uprising of Touareg separatists, reveals rare footage of the jihadists, captures life at refugee camps where money and hope are scarce, charts perilous journeys home to war-ravaged cities, and follows our characters as they set up and perform at the first public concert in Timbuktu since the music ban.

Schwartz is an award-winning American-born UK-based filmmaker, working across the world with a particular focus on Africa. T

The Countess Moira Charitable Foundation is sponsoring the Worldview series.
